Business Jargon You Need to Understand

Business Jargon You Need to Understand

I Made a Mistake—Here’s How You Can Avoid It

When I first started working with entrepreneurs, I threw around business terms I was familiar with—thinking everyone must know what I meant. Branding. Positioning. CRM. Lead magnets.

But then, my clients started asking questions. A lot of them were confused 🤯 about these terms, and it made me realize: Not everyone understands these business concepts as clearly as I do.

If you’re new to entrepreneurship, there’s a ton of jargon 📚 that can feel overwhelming. But I promise you—once you grasp the basics, you’ll feel more confident 💪 in your business decisions. So let’s break it down.

Branding, Marketing, and Sales—What’s the Difference?

You may have heard the terms branding, marketing, and sales used interchangeably, but they’re actually quite distinct from each other.

🎨 Branding is how people perceive your business. It’s your image, your vibe, your voice, and what makes you memorable. Branding is about creating an emotional connection ❤️ with your audience and defining what you stand for. It includes your messaging, tone, look, and feel. It’s not just a logo—it’s the total experience you offer.

📢 Marketing, on the other hand, is the active process of promoting your business. It includes all the methods you use to reach and attract potential customers—social media, email, advertising, PR, and more. Marketing is about driving awareness and generating interest.

Finally, 💰 Sales is the direct interaction with prospects that leads to a conversion. Whether through a sales call, a pitch, or a proposal, sales is the act of moving a lead to become a paying customer.

What’s Positioning, and Why Does It Matter?

Positioning 🎯 is how you set your business apart from others in your industry.

For example, if you’re a career coach, your positioning could be helping job seekers in a specific industry or with a specific challenge, like remote work 🌍 or tech jobs 💻.

It’s about identifying a niche where you can stand out and become the go-to expert 🏆.

Positioning helps potential clients understand exactly what you offer and why they should choose you over someone else.

Key Terms You Need to Know

Landing Page 🖥️ – A single-page website designed for a specific goal (like sign-ups or sales). You use landing pages to drive conversions.

CRM (Customer Relationship Management) 📊 – A tool that helps you track and manage interactions with leads and clients. It allows you to log calls, track sales progress, and automate follow-ups. Without a CRM, it’s easy to lose track of important details.

Email Marketing & Sequences 📧 – Email marketing is about sending valuable, relevant emails to your subscribers. An email sequence is a series of automated emails designed to engage, educate, and convert your audience over time.

Lead Magnet (Opt-in, Freebie) 🎁 – A free resource offered in exchange for someone’s email. This could be anything from a free ebook to a webinar 🎤, and it’s a great way to grow your email list.

Digital Product 💿 – A product you sell online that doesn’t require ongoing involvement after purchase. Examples include courses, eBooks, and templates.

Audience Persona 🎯 – A fictional, detailed representation of your ideal client. It includes their demographic information, goals, challenges, and behaviors. Crafting an audience persona helps you create content and offers that resonate deeply with your ideal clients.

Automation – Using systems or tools to handle repetitive tasks for you. For example, when you send contracts, accept payments, or schedule follow-ups—those can all be automated to save you time ⏳.
